Antihistamines and Telfast

What is an antihistamine?

Antihistamines are used by allergy sufferers to help relieve allergy symptoms and also to prevent allergy symptoms from occurring. Antihistamines are available over the counter without a prescription. Talk to your pharmacist to work out which antihistamine would be best for you.

What types of antihistamines are available?

Two types of antihistamines are used for allergies. They are known as first-generation antihistamines and second-generation antihistamines.

First generation antihistamines commonly have drowsiness as a side effect whereas second generation antihistamines do not. This can affect your ability to operate machinery, drive your car and think clearly. Some people may use these medicines for the drowsiness effect, particularly where allergic symptoms such as runny or congested nose affects sleep.

Why are antihistamines used?

Antihistamines are used to assist with managing a number of allergic health conditions. Antihistamines can’t cure allergic conditions, but they do provide much needed relief from the symptoms of:

  1. Hayfever (allergic rhinitis) – this common allergic condition can cause sneezing, runny nose, inflammation of nose and eyes, and itching of eyes, nose and throat.
  2. Allergic skin conditions – such as eczema, rashes, hives (urticaria) and generalised itching (pruritus).
  3. Allergic conjunctivitis – inflammation of the eyes, red, itchy and watery eyes.
  4. Bites and stings – if there is an allergic reaction, symptoms of raised circular welts, that may or may not be itchy, can appear.
  5. Food allergies – for mild reactions of hives, runny nose, itchy nose and mouth. More severe reactions, known as anaphylaxis require emergency treatment.

How do antihistamines work?

As the name suggests, antihistamines work by stopping the effects of histamine. Histamine is a chemical substance released by the body’s immune system as a response to allergy. Histamine is generally very helpful, however in allergic reactions there may be too much histamine released which leads to a number of symptoms such as runny nose, itchy eyes and swelling.

How do I choose an antihistamine?

Your doctor or pharmacist may advise a particular antihistamine depending on the cause of your allergy.

What is Telfast?

Telfast is a second-generation antihistamine, which means it is less likely to cause drowsiness than some of the earlier antihistamines.

Telfast is used to help with managing the symptoms of hayfever allergies, year round allergies, and itchy skin rash/hives. Antihistamines don’t cure these conditions but can often provide much needed relief from the unpleasant symptoms.

Telfast is available in three different strengths, which each have their own indications:

  • Telfast 60mg strength: Seasonal hayfever and year round allergies
  • Telfast 120mg strength: Seasonal hayfever allergies
  • Telfast 180mg strength: Seasonal hayfever allergies and itchy skin rash/hives

Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.

How does Telfast 180mg work?

Telfast 180mg is the highest strength of Telfast available – it contains 180mg of the active ingredient fexofenadine hydrochloride (HCl).

This is a fast-acting antihistamine shown to relieve the symptoms of hayfever allergies, without causing drowsiness. This active ingredient works similarly to many antihistamines by blocking histamine receptors in the cells of the body.

Fexofenadine can be taken daily and is effective everyday if you are suffering from seasonal allergies over a period of time such as spring. As allergy symptoms often peak in the morning, fast acting treatments such as Telfast can help in providing relief when hayfever allergy symptoms occur.

Always read the label. Follow the directions for use. If symptoms persist, talk to your health professional.
