Evening hayfever remedies
Your chances of developing hayfever symptoms on any given day are largely dependent on how much pollen is in the air. Evenings can be a particularly high risk time for hayfever sufferers, as this
is when pollen begins to fall to the ground and pollen levels increase.1 So is there anything you can do to reduce the likelihood of a hayfever attack ruining your evening plans? Fortunately, the answer is yes. Here are some tips to help you:
Shower or change your clothes
If possible, have a shower and change your clothes before heading out for the evening. This will help to wash away the pollen that’s collected on your face, hair and clothes during the day and minimise the amount you breathe in. If you don’t have time or a full wardrobe change isn’t practical, simply washing your face and hands can make a big difference as well.1
Try and minimise the time you spend outdoors in the late afternoon and early evening if you are prone to developing hayfever symptoms later in the day. Keep the doors and windows in your house, office and car closed as much as possible and turn on the air conditioning if you can.
Change your exercise routine
If your outdoor exercise routine consistently causes a flare up of hayfever symptoms, consider changing from an outdoor run or cycle to indoor options like a cycle class, aerobics or a cardio
workout at the gym. Other enjoyable ways to keep fit without reaching for a box of tissues include indoor dance classes, pilates, indoor yoga or swimming.
Choose indoor venues when catching up with friends
There’s no reason hayfever should stop you from enjoying your evenings spent with friends and family. In order to reduce hayfever symptoms or avoid them altogether, try and organise get togethers
at indoor venues rather than outdoor cafes or events.
Take an antihistamine
Life is unpredictable and it won’t be possible to follow these guidelines 100% of the time. In cases where you know you will be at risk of developing hayfever symptoms, take an antihistamine tablet
such as Telfast an hour or two before the outing. This will help to alleviate any sneezing or watering and itching eyes that you may otherwise have experienced. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist
