Hayfever and Perennial Allergies

WHAT ARE THE MAIN TYPES OF ALLERGIC RHINITIS?

SAR: Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (Intermittent) – more commonly called hayfever. Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis describes an inflammation or irritation of the nasal lining as part of an allergic reaction and is triggered by something ‘seasonal’ e.g. pollen or grass. Despite hayfever being classed as seasonal and more common in spring, pollens do continue to exist all year round although to a lesser extent.

PAR: Perennial Allergic Rhinitis (Year round) – sometimes called year round allergies – has the same symptoms as SAR but is triggered by something that is often present all year round e.g. dust mites or pet dander or mould.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HAYFEVER?

There are several symptoms that might indicate you are suffering from a hayfever allergy. Read on to learn more.

  1. Sneezing, runny nose or nasal congestion.
  2. Itchy, red or watery eyes.
  3. Itchy throat or palate.
  4. Itchy skin

Hayfever symptoms are due to airborne pollens and allergens making their way into your respiratory system, nose or eyes and triggering a reaction that can inflame the area and cause hayfever symptoms.

TREATMENT OF HAYFEVER

There are lifestyle measures and medications that can treat and relieve the symptoms of hayfever and allergy suffering.

Lifestyle measures include avoidance such as, not going out when the pollen count is high. Medications such as non-sedating antihistamines, like Telfast, are recommended for reducing hayfever symptoms quickly because they work directly by blocking histamine – the main chemical responsible for the symptoms of hayfever.

Telfast offers fast, effective relief from allergy and hayfever symptoms without causing drowsiness. For those with persistent or severe hayfever, your pharmacist or general practitioner may recommend you a nasal steroid spray, in addition to an antihistamine treatment. Nasal steroid sprays will reduce inflammation in the nasal passage to help relieve symptoms.

If your symptoms are not being relieved by your current treatment, talk to your doctor or pharmacist for other options that may better suit your needs.
